The UK's national mapping agency, the Ordnance Survey, have
created a network of passive and active GPS stations that provide
coverage throughout the UK. This is an excellent and very advanced
development. However, our advice at Merrett Survey Partnership
is to advance with caution. This system is incredibly useful.
But without detailed knowledge of what GPS is all about, the 'ease
of use' of the system could lead to mistakes being made.
Elevations can be converted from GPS 'ellipsoid' values to
OS 'geoid' (height above sea level) values very easily. However,
the new geoid model may not agree with the values obtained by
local bench marks. The answers aren't wrong - just different.
Soon, we will fill these pages with information and advice
that will be of genuine practical use to our clients. This topic
"The practical implementation of the UK's new GPS reference
system" is the subject of a paper being prepared by Peter
Merrett. This will hopefully provide guidance to those who are
less familiar with the implications of this change.
